Returning Student Policies

Returning undergraduate students attending Emory College, Oxford College, Goizueta Business School, or the Nursing School must submit financial aid application materials by published deadlines to receive the maximum institutional aid for which they are eligible.

  • The FAFSA must be completed by February 15 to be considered on-time.
  • Late applications incur a penalty which reduces institutional need-based grant eligibility.
  • The later the submission is past February 15, the greater the penalty.
  • Applications completed after the first day of the fall term may not be considered for institutional grant funding.
  • Supplemental documents or forms (federal verification items) may be requested at a later date.
  • Supplemental materials may be submitted after February 15 without penalty.

Emory College and Undergraduate Business students are infrequently approved to enroll in fewer than 12 hours and usually only in their final semester. To remain eligible for need-based aid, students must take 6 or more hours. Students taking fewer than 6 hours will not be eligible for need-based aid and their entire financial aid package will be canceled for the semester. If a student receiving need-based aid enrolls in 6 to 11 hours, tuition charges are prorated based on hours enrolled and grant aid will be adjusted accordingly. Federal Direct and private loans are not adjusted and remain the same for 6 to 12+ hours enrolled.

Merit scholarships are adjusted on a case-by-case basis and with a goal of ensuring scholarship amount does not exceed the cost of tuition. For merit aid only, students may enroll in 1 or more hours.

If a student underloads (less than 12 hours), financial aid will not be adjusted or disbursed until after Add/Drop/Swap ends. This timing allows the Office of Financial Aid to make accurate adjustments reflecting the student's finalized hours of enrollment.

Undergraduate students returning from a Leave of Absence must submit financial aid application materials within 30 days of their notification of readmission from their school.

  • The FAFSA must be completed within 30 days of the student's readmission notification to be considered on-time.
  • Late applications are assessed a penalty which reduces institutional need-based grant eligibility.
  • The later the submission, the greater the penalty.
  • Federal work-study will not be offered to students with late applications.
  • A FAFSA received/completed after the first day of the term (if beyond the 30-day submission deadline) will not be considered for institutional grant funding.
  • Supplemental documents or forms (federal verification items) may be requested at a later date and may be submitted without penalty.
